Mark J Newton is a British artist currently living and working in London. His work employs methods of fragmentation and distortion to collage internet-based imagery using paint. This re-appropriation of animal photography is a commentary on humanity’s increasing distance from non-human species and the role the screen and simulacra have in relation to current attitudes towards animals.
A sense of the uncanny is important in Newton’s work. His intention is for the paintings to elicit feelings of doubt, confusion or curiosity from the viewer regarding the creatures depicted. To contribute to this sense of the unreal and inexplicable, he prefers to use acrylic paint for its plastic and lurid properties, applying it in varying thicknesses to maintain the integrity of the medium in light of his photographic source material.
